Emulsifying Wax is an ingredient that enables you to combine water and oil to make cosmetic formulations. Creams and lotions etc are essentially a blend of oil and water, and without an emulsifying agent, the oil and water would simply separate. Emulsifiers are the glue that holds it all together. Emulsifying Wax binds water and oil together and thickens and stabilises the formulations. It creates a thicker more luxurious texture, making application to the skin easier.
Whenever you use water in skincare formulations, we recommend you use a preservative to prevent your formulation from developing bacteria, yeast or fungus which can be dangerous. There are natural preservatives available if you want to avoid synthetic additives.
Use Emulsifying Wax to create your own face and body creams, lotions, facial cleansers, body butters, conditioners, soaps and candles. The possibilities are endless!
Certified cruelty free and vegan friendly.
How to use
As a rule, use between 5%-10% Emulsifying Wax in your emulsions. Melt the wax beads with your other fats/oils and then slowly introduce your water phase while continually stirring. Ensure you keep your formulation in motion until it cools completely in order to create a stable emulsion. Be sure not to overheat an emulsifier, as it will lose its ability to combine oil and water and the formulation with separate.
Make your own body lotion
Organic Apricot Kernel Oil (#204) and Grapefruit Essential Oil (#115).
Weigh out 10g of Emulsifying Wax, 15g Apricot Kernel, 4.8g Vitamin E, 70g distilled water and 0.8g (approx. 18 drops) of essential oil.
Melt the wax on a double boiler or in the microwave, add in the Apricot. Once melted, slowly add in the heated distilled water and stir continually.
Add in the essential oil and continue to stir until it cools. Allow the emulsion to fully set before applying to your skin. You can switch out the carrier and essential oil to whichever oils you want to use. For a fragrance-free lotion simply leave out the essential oil.
As this is a water based formulation, it will have a much shorter shelf life than a purely oil based product. It should last up to a maximum of 2 weeks if kept in the fridge. If you want to prolong the life of your products, you will need to add a preservative at 1% of the finished product.
As with any new product always conduct a patch test before first use.
