With so many brands and products on the market today, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to choosing the right eyelash and eyebrow serum. All too often, we see promising phrases and descriptions, from “miracle growth” to “instant results”, thrown around on the internet – but just how safe and reliable are these claims?

It’s no secret that long, thick eyelashes and eyebrows are desired by many. In fact, there’s actually some psychology behind why we find long eyelashes attractive (and why we have done for years). Firstly, strong and healthy eyelashes are a sign of overall health. Some diseases and conditions can cause eyelash loss, so having a full set of long lashes is a general indication that we’re healthy and fit. Secondly, long eyelashes open up the eyes and make them appear bigger and brighter – a symbol of youthfulness that is typically associated with increased attractiveness.

Similarly, thick eyebrows are considered to be more attractive too; a study carried out by scientists at Oakland University in Michigan found that women with thicker eyebrows are “more attractive to men” when exploring how facial features rank for attractiveness. This may be because thick eyebrows help to define facial structure, or it could be that a thicker eyebrow helps to balance out features – either way, it’s safe to say that long eyelashes and thick eyebrows are considered desirable.

What’s the real cost of long eyelashes and thick eyebrows?

There are plenty of ways to achieve longer eyelashes and thicker eyebrows. From semi-permanent eyelash extensions to eyebrow pencils that fill in sparse patches and create the illusion of darker hairs, the beauty industry isn’t short of solutions. While these methods aren’t considered dangerous, there’s one beauty item doing the rounds that is causing more harm than good: lash and brow serums containing prostaglandins.

What are prostaglandins and how are they harmful?

Prostaglandins are chemical compounds with hormone-like effects, found naturally within the body’s tissue. They were originally used in eyedrops to treat glaucoma (an eye condition that damages the optic nerve), but it soon became apparent that people using eyedrops containing prostaglandins were also experiencing incredible eyelash growth. It wasn’t long before beauty brands caught on to this odd phenomenon – and soon enough, a large number of lash and brow serums launched featuring prostaglandins as the key ingredient.

However, people soon came to realise that serums packed with prostaglandins were also causing lots of undesirable – and at times, horrific – side effects. People using these products were experiencing eyelid inflammation, blurred vision, darkening of skin around the eyes, itchy, swollen and red eyes, loss of eyelashes over time and even irreversible ocular surface damage. In 2018, a well-known brand using prostaglandins was banned from being sold in Australia due to the side effects customers were experiencing. However, lots of brands have found ways around this – mainly by developing and using synthetic prostaglandins which boost the growth of eyelashes, but still have the same damaging effects.

The issue is, while these synthetic alternative ingredients can cause the same potential side effects, brands are not disclosing them. In other words, lots of people don’t even realise that their eyelash and eyebrow serums could be damaging their eyes.

Do all eyelash serums contain growth hormones?

Fortunately, not all eyelash and eyebrow serums contain growth hormones that can cause damaging side effects – you’ve just got to be careful where and what you buy. To avoid eyelash serums that contain these chemical compounds, look out for (and avoid) the following ingredients:

  • Isopropyl Cloprostenate
  • Bitamoprost
  • Isopropanol Phenyl-hydroxy-pentene
  • Dihydroxy-cyclopentyl-heptenate
  • Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro
  • Ethylcloprostenolamide

The good news is, there are natural and safe ways to grow long eyelashes and thick eyebrows without putting your health at risk. Thanks to powerful all-natural plant extracts that boost the appearance of eyelashes and eyebrows, you no longer have to put your eyes at risk to achieve longer, thicker lashes and brows.

What ingredients should I be looking out for?

A nourishing oil

It’s beneficial to choose a serum with a nourishing oil base. One of the most popular choices is Castor Oil, which moisturises eyelash and eyebrow hairs to make them appear fuller and thicker. Castor Oil is also a natural source of vitamins, proteins and Omega-6 fats, which naturally promote hair growth. Another go-to is Coconut Oil, which offers protection against breakage and locks moisture into hairs, for healthier lashes and brows.

Vitamin E

Keep an eye out for Vitamin E if you’re looking for a natural lash and brow boost. Known for its anti-aging properties and natural antioxidants which promote hair growth, Vitamin E is a natural conditioner and helps to reduce oxidative damage that can contribute to hair loss.

Active ingredients

Look for eyelash and eyebrow serums that contain natural active ingredients. These are natural ingredients that have been clinically proven to do their job – in this case, aid the growth of long and healthy lashes and brows.
